Know Your Rights Training with Southwark Law Centre

Jun 3, 2025 | Protect Our Places

Jed Holloway (Solicitor, Planning Voice, Southwark Law Centre) joined Protect Our Places (POP) on 28 May 2025 for a ‘Know Your Rights’ training for market traders and community members. This training focused on what rights market traders and local, independent businesses have under the planning process, and how traders and community members can use these rights to contest the redevelopment, displacement and gentrification. This is the second of four (2/4) Protect Our Places workshops, organised to support market traders and London communities fighting gentrification. The first was a pro-bono legal workshop on leases and consultation law by Landmark Chambers.

The presentation began with a brief overview of the planning process, including who important decision makers are and which council representatives local communities might be able to push on to get their concerns recognised. Jed continued by exploring the differences in protections under the London Plan vs local plans. Using Southwark as a case study, he identified policies which can support, or be expanded to better support, threatened businesses.

He then elaborated on the role of ‘material considerations’ in the planning process, before finishing with an explanation of the public sector equality duty and arguments relating to it can support traders and campaigns.

You can watch the full 45 minute Know Your Rights training for market traders and community members below or on Latin Elephant’s Youtube channel. It was followed by a Q&A session (also uploaded below and available via Youtube). You can find Jed’s powerpoint here.
