‘Migrant and Ethnic Economies in Times of Crisis’ – new report

Mar 17, 2023 | News and Events, Publications

‘Migrant and Ethnic Economies in Times of Crisis: Regeneration, COVID, Brexit and Cost of Living’ considers how traders and small businesses in Elephant and Castle have been impacted by four successive and overlapping yet distinct crises. It highlights the ways in which the Regeneration of Elephant and Castle — and resulting displacement — has created base levels of instability which make independent businesses in the area more vulnerable to other shocks.

Ultimately, the report argues that the challenges which EC traders presently face cannot be attributed to any individual crisis alone; rather, such harm emerges from the ways in which each interacts with other locally- and globally-situated forces. The report also proposes alternative policy approaches to rebuild business resilience and support the local traders going forward.
